Plug Power Inc., a leading U.S. provider of hydrogen fuel systems, has embarked on an ambitious $6 billion initiative to construct three green hydrogen and ammonia production plants in Finland. This venture aims to bolster the European market with green hydrogen, produced through environmentally friendly processes. The project’s significance lies in its scale and strategic positioning, leveraging Finland’s renewable energy infrastructure, were the Finnish grid’s high renewable energy composition (87%) simplifies and enhances the green hydrogen generation process.
The project encompasses three strategically chosen locations in Finland- Kokkola, Kristianstad and Porvoo-each tailored to exploit local resources and infrastructure. The Kokkola site is set to produce 85 TPD of liquid green hydrogen and up to 700 kilotons of green ammonia annually, leveraging 1 GW of electrolyzers. Kristianstad’s plant will focus on green hydrogen production for green steel manufacturing, targeting 2.0 million tonnes per year of DRI/HBI, utilizing a similar scale of electrolyzed capacity. The Porvoo facility aims to supply up to 100 TPD by 2030, focusing on local mobility solutions and hydrogen export through pipeline injection to Western Europe.
These initiatives are not just about hydrogen production, they represent significant strides towards decarbonization in Europe, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and supporting clean industry and transport sectors. The projects involve collaboration with multiple financial and industrial partners to secure investment and offtake agreements. The involvement of local municipalities and the strategic selection of production sites highlight the initiative’s potential for regional economic development, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
Plug Power has partnered with global project developers like Hy2Gen for ammonia plant development and GravitHy for the DRI/HBI plant, emphasizing the collaborative effort to decarbonize critical industrial processes. These partnerships aim to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable economy, aligning with Finland’s ambition to become a leader in the green hydrogen economy in Europe.
